Global Mission Fellows

Global Mission Fellows Website

Mission:

Generation Transformation:Global Mission Fellows is a 24-month, faith and justice-centered leadership-development and mission-service program for adults ages 20-30, interested in partnering in solidarity with faith-based organizations, either in their home context or abroad. GMF Fellows are commissioned as UMC missionaries who integrate faith and justice by learning, walking, and working with communities in their struggles to address systemic injustice and human suffering.

Issues:

Global Mission Fellows boldly re-examine their roles and participation in society as they struggle with issues such as hunger, homelessness, HIV/AIDS, illiteracy, children at risk, substance abuse, racism, domestic violence, trafficking, financial justice/literacy, immigration/migration, food justice, sustainable agriculture, climate change, clean water, worker justice, inadequate healthcare and more.

Examples of roles volunteers might hold include:
  •      HIV/AIDS Community Advisor
  •      Social Enterprise Support Facilitator for Poverty Reduction
  •      Manager of Volunteer Programs

Domestic: MARCH 31

Start Date

Candidate Training, Comissioning: July/August

Housing

Varies; some living communally, some in shared apartments, or occasionally alone in an apartment, but always relating/interacting with other Fellows in ‘intentional community’ by regular meetings, either in person or online.

Community

Where living arrangements make it possible, Fellows are expected to meet twice a month as a covenant group to share their experiences, both challenges and victories. Fellows will be accountable to one another to meet, share, pray and support one another as they build a covenant community.

Where distance makes regular in-person meetings impractical, regular meetings via Skype or a similar platform can substitute. In affiliate locations, local GMF Affiliate Coordinators make provision for periodic in-person gatherings of their Fellows. Fellows residing with others outside the GMF program may also participate in house meetings and other activities as invited. Additional support will be found through participation in the fellowship of a local church.

Spiritual mentors are also provided to Fellows who will support and accompany them during their term of service.

Spirituality

Affiliation: United Methodist Church

Training, Mid-terms and End-terms provide an opportunity to examine the role of one’s personal faith and the role of the church in addressing the root causes of injustice.
